Bowling balls in Malaysia cost about RM360 for a plastic ball and RM550 to RM1,120 for a reactive ball at local pro shops, based on October 2026 web-store prices. Most beginners do fine with a free house ball at first. Once you bowl every week, though, a ball drilled to your hand at a pro shop is the single biggest upgrade you can make.
This page covers the decisions in order: whether you need your own ball, which cover and weight to pick, what to pay, where to buy and how drilling works. Each section links to a deeper guide.
House ball or your own ball?
Every centre lets you use its house balls for free with your game. They have a hard plastic cover, a light core and big, evenly spaced holes so anyone can use them. That makes them fine for a casual night out. However, a house ball rarely fits your hand well, so you squeeze it, and squeezing ruins your swing.
Your own ball changes three things. First, the pro shop drills the holes to your span and finger size. Second, you can pick a cover that hooks into the pocket. Third, you get the same ball every time, so your practice actually carries over. If you bowl in a league or more than twice a month, it pays off. Our guide to bowling balls for beginners explains when to make the jump.
Coverstock: the part that touches the lane
The cover decides how much the ball grips the lane oil. Here is the short version:
- Plastic (polyester): goes nearly straight. It's cheap, tough and ideal for spares.
- Urethane: a smooth, controllable arc with moderate hook, best on drier lanes.
- Reactive resin: absorbs oil and grips harder, so it hooks most, especially at the back of the lane. Solid, pearl and hybrid versions read the lane differently.
- Particle: reactive covers with tiny particles that bite through heavy oil.
One local note: in January 2026 the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) barred slow oil-absorbing high-performance urethane balls from tournaments run by MTBC and its state affiliates. That doesn't affect casual or most league bowling, but it matters if you plan to enter MTBC events. Our page on the types of bowling balls covers each cover, the cores inside and the rules in detail.
Weight: start lighter than you think
A common starting point is about 10% of your body weight, up to the legal maximum of 16 lb (7.26 kg). In practice, comfort beats the formula. If the ball pulls your arm or your shoulder aches after three games, drop a pound or two. Our bowling ball weight guide has a chart in pounds and kilograms, plus advice for kids, women and seniors.
The core and why balls hook differently
Inside every reactive ball sits a shaped weight block, the core. Symmetric cores give a smooth, predictable arc. Asymmetric cores are lopsided on purpose, so they react more sharply when the ball leaves the oil. Beginners usually do better with a symmetric core because it forgives small mistakes. As your rev rate grows, an asymmetric ball becomes useful on heavier oil.

Where to buy bowling balls in Malaysia
Buy from a pro shop inside a bowling centre if you can. The staff measure your hand, help you choose a weight and drill the ball on the spot or within a few days. Sunway Megalanes lists 27 Storm VIP pro shop outlets across 11 states and federal territories. Meanwhile, Brunswick's group brands reach Malaysia through JNJ Distribution, the company behind X Proshop. Our directory of bowling shops in Malaysia lists pro shops by state.
Online marketplaces sometimes look cheaper. Even so, you still need someone to drill the ball, and some shops charge extra for a ball bought elsewhere. Add that cost before you compare prices, because the cheapest bowling balls in Malaysia online can end up costing more than a pro-shop deal with free drilling.
Second-hand balls: check before you pay
Carousell and Mudah carry plenty of used bowling balls in Malaysia, with search listings from around RM100 in October 2026. A used ball carries the previous owner's holes, so you will usually pay for plugging and re-drilling (price: verify locally). Look for cracks around the holes, ask how many games it has rolled, and confirm the weight. A ball that has been plugged and re-drilled several times may have little room left for new holes.
Drilling and fitting
Drilling turns a blank ball into your ball. The driller measures your span and finger sizes, then chooses a grip and a layout. Most new hook bowlers move to a fingertip grip, which helps the ball rotate. The layout, meaning where the holes sit relative to the core, fine-tunes when the ball hooks. Sunway's starter packages include free drilling, excluding inserts. A 2014 local blog quoted about RM50 to drill an outside ball, so ask your shop for its current rate. Our guide to drilling layouts explains the terms you will hear.
After that, look after the ball. Wipe it after every shot, clean it after each session and never leave it in a hot car. Our ball care guide covers cleaning and resurfacing in Malaysian heat.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a bowling ball in Malaysia?
On the two Malaysian pro-shop web stores we checked in October 2026, a plastic ball cost RM360 to RM470. Entry reactive balls ran RM550 to RM710, mid-range RM800 to RM990, and high-end balls RM1,030 to RM1,120. Drilling is often free when you buy the ball at the same shop. Shops also discount in store, so ask before you pay the listed price.
Is it worth buying your own bowling ball?
Yes, once you bowl most weeks. A ball drilled for your hand lets you grip lighter, swing more freely and repeat the same shot. House balls have wide holes and a fixed span, so they fit nobody perfectly. If you only bowl at birthdays or company events, a house ball and a few spare RM for games is the better deal.
Can I buy a bowling ball from Shopee or Lazada?
You can, but you still need a pro shop to drill it. Some shops include drilling only for balls they sold, and a 2014 local blog quoted about RM50 to drill an outside ball. Check the seller, the weight and the serial number, and ask your pro shop for its current drilling price first. Then compare the total cost, not just the ball price.
How long does a bowling ball last?
A plastic spare ball can last many years because it barely absorbs oil. Reactive balls lose some of their hook as they soak up lane oil and the surface wears. Regular cleaning, oil extraction and resurfacing at a pro shop bring much of that back. Most league bowlers replace or add a ball after a few seasons rather than because the old one broke.
Do bowling centres in Malaysia lend house balls?
Yes. Bowling centres in Malaysia keep racks of house balls for players to use during their games, normally at no extra charge, while shoes are usually a separate rental (check at the counter). Weights and colour codes vary by centre, so lift a few before you start. Pick the heaviest one you can swing smoothly for three games without tiring.
