Island or mainland?

On the island, Penang Bowl on Lebuh Farquhar is the easy pick. It's a small, old-school centre with a cafeteria and a Tuesday league, and it stays open until 1am. If you live near Bayan Lepas, Aspiration Centre at Sunshine Square is closer. Wikipedia says the mall's alley became function halls, but Google reviews from 2025–26 describe 32 working lanes, and a pro shop sits in the same mall.

On the mainland, Megamall in Perai is the serious bowler's house. It runs the Penang International each year, and the 52nd edition takes place from 11 to 19 December 2026. Meanwhile, Ole Ole at Mydin Bukit Mertajam is a budget option and hosted a tournament in November 2025.

Closed and changed centres

Classic Bowl at Kompleks Bukit Jambul, once Bukit Jambul Bowl, has closed. Google Maps marks it permanently closed, and a visitor reported finding it shut in 2025. Ampang Superbowl also once ran a 24-lane branch at Plaza Bukit Mertajam. It appeared on a 2014 list of Penang centres, but it's missing from the chain's current outlet list, so treat it as closed. Also, we found no bowling at Queensbay Mall or Gurney Plaza, despite a few old forum mentions.

Nearby options and gear

From Butterworth or Bukit Mertajam, Sungai Petani is less than an hour's drive (our estimate). It has three centres listed on our page for bowling alleys in Kedah. Further south, Ipoh has two large centres; see bowling in Perak.

If you're ready for your own ball, pro shops at the main bowling alleys in Penang can drill it. Our guide to Penang bowling shops lists them. New bowlers can start with our beginner bowling tips, and the national directory covers every other state.

Frequently asked questions

Which bowling alley in Penang has the most lanes?

Megamall Bowling Centre at Penang Megamall in Perai has 48 Brunswick lanes, the most in the state. It also hosts the Penang International championship each December. On the island, Aspiration Centre at Sunshine Square has 32 lanes and was still open in 2026.

How much does a game of bowling cost in Penang?

Penang is one of the cheaper places to bowl in Malaysia. Listings from January 2024 showed RM4 to RM5 a game at Penang Bowl, RM6 to RM7 at Ole Ole in Bukit Mertajam and RM10 at Megamall. Shoes cost RM2 to RM3.50. Prices may have risen since, so ask at the counter.

Are bowling alleys in Penang open late at night?

Yes. Penang Bowl lists 10am to 1am daily, and both Megamall and Ole Ole list closing at midnight. Hours can change during Ramadan and on public holidays, so check the centre's Facebook page or call before a late trip.
