Bowling bags: how to pick the right bag

Bowling balls waiting on the ball return, ready to be packed into bowling bags after the game

Bowling bags come in two styles, totes you carry and rollers on wheels, sized for one, two or three balls. Pick the size that matches the balls you own now. In Malaysia, a 1-ball tote costs RM58 to RM135 and a 2-ball roller RM265 to RM600 at local pro shops (October 2026). Most bowlers start with a tote and switch to a roller once they carry two balls.

Totes vs rollers

A tote is a padded bag with handles and a shoulder strap. It is light, cheap and easy to stash in a small car boot. But a ball weighs up to about 7 kg, so carrying more than one gets tiring fast.

A roller has wheels and a pull-up handle, like cabin luggage. It costs more and weighs more empty. However, it saves your back across big mall car parks and long walks from the LRT. For two or more balls, a roller is the sensible choice.

Bowling bags by size

Here is how the main sizes compare, with prices from the two Malaysian pro-shop web stores on 16 October 2026.

Storm also sold a 1-ball add-on bag for RM135. It clips onto some rollers, which lets you grow a bag instead of replacing it.

How to choose

Ask yourself three questions before you buy.

  1. How many balls do you use? Most weekly bowlers need two: a reactive strike ball and a plastic spare ball. So a 2-ball roller suits most people.
  2. How do you travel? If you take the train or bus, a compact bag matters more than capacity. If you drive, check your car boot first.
  3. Will you grow your arsenal? A 3-ball roller gives room to expand. However, it is bigger and heavier when full.

Also check the shoe compartment. Many 1-ball totes have a pocket for one pair, while rollers usually have a separate one. Bring your shoes to the shop to test the fit.

Build quality to look for

Cheap bowling bags fail in the same places. Before you pay, check these points:

  • Wheels: larger, replaceable wheels roll better on rough car park floors.
  • Handle: it should lock firmly and not wobble at full height.
  • Ball cups: each ball should sit in a padded, separate holder so balls do not knock together.
  • Zips: heavy zips last longer, especially on the main ball compartment.
  • Ventilation: a vented shoe pocket helps sweaty shoes dry in our humidity.

Heat, humidity and your bag

A bag protects your ball from knocks, not heat. Never leave bowling bags in a parked car in the Malaysian sun. Storm's ball care guide tells bowlers to store balls at room temperature and to avoid leaving them in the car. Our bowling ball care guide covers storage in detail.

Meanwhile, wipe the bag out now and then. Oily towels and damp shoes left inside breed mould in humid weather.

Flying with bowling bags to tournaments

Malaysian bowlers fly to tournaments in Sabah, Sarawak and abroad. Airlines treat bowling balls as checked sports equipment, but the rules and fees differ.

  • Check the airline first. Malaysia Airlines lists bowling equipment among sports items that should be packed in protective materials. Its general checked-bag limit is 32 kg per piece. AirAsia and other carriers set their own sports equipment fees and weights, so read their current pages before you book.
  • Weigh it at home. Three balls alone weigh roughly 20 kg, before the bag, shoes and towels.
  • Use a roller with a hard base, and wrap each ball in a towel or ball cover.
  • Carry small items in your cabin bag: spare slide pads, tape and inserts. Leave liquid cleaners in checked luggage to avoid cabin liquid limits.

For upcoming events, see our bowling competitions calendar. For the rest of your kit, the bowling equipment guide has budgets by level, and the bowling balls hub helps you choose what goes inside the bag.

Frequently asked questions

What size bowling bag do I need?

Match the bag to the balls you own today, plus one if you plan to add a spare ball soon. One ball fits a single tote. A strike ball and a plastic spare ball need a 2-ball bag. Buy a 3-ball roller only when you really carry three balls, because it is bulky and heavier to lift into a car boot.

Are roller bowling bags worth it?

Yes, once you carry two balls. Two balls weigh roughly 12 to 14 kg, which is hard on your shoulder across a mall car park. A roller puts that weight on wheels. In Malaysia, 1-ball rollers started at about RM225 and 2-ball rollers at about RM265 in October 2026, so the step up from a tote is modest.

Can I carry a bowling bag on the LRT or MRT?

We found no published rule that bans bowling bags on Rapid KL trains, but check the operator's latest rules on large items. A 1-ball tote or a compact 1-ball roller is easy to manage. A 3-ball roller is awkward on stairs and in crowds, so use lifts and avoid peak hours.

How much is a bowling bag in Malaysia?

At Malaysian pro-shop web stores in October 2026: 1-ball totes RM58 to RM135, 1-ball rollers RM225 to RM245, 2-ball rollers RM265 to RM600, and 3-ball totes or rollers RM330 to RM780. Shops often discount in store, and bundle deals with a ball can lower the price further.

Can I fit bowling shoes in a single ball bag?

Usually, yes. Most 1-ball totes have a side or end pocket sized for one pair of shoes, and 1-ball rollers have a separate shoe compartment. Very bulky performance shoes may not fit a cheap tote, so take your shoes to the shop and test the pocket before you buy.
